PAN is required for both Indians as well as Foreigners. One can apply for PAN Card Online as well as Offline. You have to submit certain documents when you apply for new PAN Card Application or when you apply for PAN Card correction. There are total two forms, 49A and 49AA. Here, 49A form is applicable to all Indian Citizens while 49AA is applicable to all foreigners.

Documents required for PAN Application by Indian Citizen (Individual)

List of Documents required by Indian Citizen who is an Individual are given below:

Proof of Identity(Copy of) to apply for PAN Card who is an Indian Citizen(Individual)

You can submit a copy of any one of the documents from the list given below:

  • Aadhar Card issued by UIDAI
  • Election Card
  • Driving License
  • Passport
  • Central Government Health Scheme Card.
  • Ration Card along with the photograph of the applicant.
  • Photo Identity card which is issued by central government, state government or any other public sector undertaking.
  • Pensioner card along with the Photograph of the Applicant.
  • Certificate of identity in original signed by a Member of Parliament or Member of Legislative Assembly or Municipal Counsellor or a Gazetted Officer.
  • Original Bank Certificate on Letterhead along with confirmed photograph and bank account of the application.

Proof of Address (Copy of) required to Apply for PAN card by Individual Indian Citizen

You can submit the copy of any one document from the list of documents given below:

  • Aadhar Card issued by UIDAI
  • Electricity Bill(not less than 3 months old)
  • Broadband Connection bill(not less than 3 months old)
  • Bank Account Statement(not less than 3 months old)
  • Driving Licence
  • Election card
  • Passport
  • Passport of the spouse
  • Post office Passbook consisting of Address of Applicant.
  • Water bill(not less than 3 months old)
  • Gas Connection card
  • Credit card statement(not less than 3 months old)
  • Domicile Certificate issued by the Government
  •  Latest order of the property tax assessment.

Proof of Date of Birth (required) required by an Individual Indian Citizen

Documents required for PAN Application by Foreigner

In some of the conditions, even a Foreigner require PAN for himself/herself. All the important documents required in such case are listed below:

Proof of Identity required by a Foreigner

You have to submit of any one of the following document as a proof of Identity.

  • Copy of Passport
  • Copy of Person of Indian Origin card issued by the Indian Government
  • A copy of Overseas citizenship of India card issued by Government of India.
  • A copy of other national or citizenship Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by “Apostille” or Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the PAN candidate is located.

Proof of Address required by a Foreigner

You have to submit a copy of any one of the following documents from the list:

  • Copy of passport
  • Copy of Person of Indian Origin card issued by Government of India
  • Copy of overseas citizenship of India card issued by Government of India
  • Copy of other national or citizenship Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number duly attested by Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country where the PAN candidate is situated
  • Copy of Bank account statement in the country of residence
  • Copy of Non-resident External (NRE) bank account statement in India
  • Copy of Certificate of Residence in India or Residential permit issued by the State Police Authorities
  • Copy of Registration certificate provided by the Foreigner’s
    Registration Office showing Indian address
  • Copy of Visa granted by the foreign country and/or copy of appointment letter provided by an Indian company and original certificate of Indian Address issued by employer

Documents required by a Hindu Undivided Family(HUF) for PAN Application

HUF is primarily a unit which consists of joint business in which the family business is being shared between the family members. This type of unit is required because income is shared between the individuals so the income tax is assigned to the whole unit. For HUF, only a single PAN is been shared between the whole unit. Here the some of the documents are to be submitted in order to apply for PAN. All the Hindu Undivided Families have to appoint a Karta who will take care of all the official protocols on behalf of HUF. The Documents required by HUF are all same as Citizen of India.

In addition to that, they have to submit some additional documents
– A statement which is being signed by the Karta of the HUF starting with the name, father’s name, and address of all the HUF members.
– Submit any one copy of the list of documents of the member who has taken the responsibility of Karta in HUF.

Documents required for PAN Application by a Company

Document required by a Registered Indian Company for PAN Application.

Documents required by any registered company of India for PAN Application are too low. Here, the company doesn’t need to submit any kind of proof of address or identity. You have to submit following list of document:

  • Copy of Certificate of Registration issued by the Registrar of Companies

Documents required for Application of PAN by a Company listed outside of India.

You have to submit following list of documents:

  • Certificate of Residence copy issued by the country of residence, duly attested by the Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country
  • Copy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up company in India by Indian authorities

Documents required for PAN Application by a Firm

Documents required for PAN Application by a firm(contains Limited Liability Partnership) registered and formed in India

An LLP is a term where all the partners have limited duties and no person is responsible for any misconduct or negligence of other partners. Anyone of the following document is required for PAN Application

  • Copy of Registration Certificate issued by the Registrar of Limited Liability Partnerships
  • Copy of partnership deed

Documents required for Firm application by a Firm situated outside in India.

Any one of the following documents needs to be submitted in order to apply for PAN Card.

  • Certificate of Residence copy issued by the country of residence, duly attested by the Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country
  • Copy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up the firm in India by Indian authorities

Documents required by a Limited Liability Partnership Registered outside India

Following documents are required:

  • Certificate of Residence copy issued by the country of residence, duly attested by the Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country
  • Copy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up LLP in India by Indian authorities

Documents required for PAN Application by Trust

A Trust is basically formed by a group of persons and is approved to hold the property on the part of beneficiary or beneficiaries. Trust can be formed based on certain criteria and strategies. Following documents are needed to be submitted by Trust in order to apply for PAN.

  • Copy of Certificate of Registration Number issued by Charity Commissioner
  • Copy of deed of Trust

Documents required for PAN Application by a Trust formed outside India

  • Certificate of Residence copy issued by the country of residence, duly attested by the Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country
  • Copy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up the trust in India by Indian authorities

Documents required for a PAN Application by Association of Persons (separate from trusts)

Documents required for PAN Application by Association of Persons registered in India

Following are the essential documents required by the Associations of Persons in India

  • Copy of Agreement
  • Copy of Certificate of Registration Number issued by
    Charity Commissioner or Registrar of Co-operative Society or
    any other Competent Authority
  • Any other document originating from any Central Government or State Government Department establishing Identity and address of such person.

Documents required for PAN Application by Associations of Persons registered outside India

Following essential documents are required for PAN Application by Associations of Trust outside India

  • Certificate of Residence copy issued by the country of residence, duly attested by the Apostille or by Indian Embassy or High Commission or Consulate in the country
  • A copy of Registration Certificate issued in India or copy of approval granted to set up the entity in India by Indian authorities.
